Earth Leakage Relay

It has designed & developed earth leakage relay based on the ic technology which is a protective device. It protects electrical system from fire and other electrical hazards. The unit is consisting of two part. (a) basic relay (b) core balance current transformer (cbct). Cbct is a sensing device which senses earth leakage current of the electrical system & the small signal generated across cbct's terminal is fed to highly reliable electronic circuit. If earth leakage current exceeds than set value.

The electro magnetic relay is energised which can be used for tripping mccb / ocb / acb or any other device. Cbct's available in different diameters viz., 70 mm, 100mm & 200mm. The basic unit is housed in hips box. It is base mounting as well as din rail mounting. The size is 50mm x 80mm x 115mm. The weight of basic unit is approx. 310 gms. The leakage current range is 30ma to 300ma, 100ma to 1000ma & 500ma to 5000ma.

Introduction

Earth leakage current gives rise to generation of heat and progressive failure of insulation which leads to earth faults, sparks, deterioration of earthing, catastrophic fires etc.
Earth Leakage Relay detects leakage current well before they cross threshold limits and isolates the supply instantly with the help of MCCB / ACB / OCB / Contactor etc.

Principle of Operation

Under ideal conditions, the incoming and outgoing currents are equal and opposite direction. In leakage free system, vector sum of three phase currents is zero and it can be expressed as i + i + i = 0 for 3 phase 3 wire system. i + i + i + i = 0 for 3 phase 4 wire system.

In case of leakage's due to insulation failure, direct phase to ground, insulation weakness etc, the vector sum of current is not zero. It's perfectly designed Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT) senses the leakage current and generates small signal across it. This signal is feed to ELR unit where it is amplified and compared to preset current level. When leakage current cross the preset level current, instantly it switch on the relay which is normally off. The relay contact is used to trip main device like MCCB / OCB / Contactor etc.
